Comprehensive Tax Preparer Training
The University of Illinois Tax School is pleased to partner with The Income Tax School (ITS), a division of Peoples Income Tax, to provide our customers with an online solution for comprehensive tax training.
Originally founded in 1989 to meet the tax training needs of Peoples Tax, ITS launched its online tax school in 2001 and now teaches tax education to students nationwide and beyond.

Comprehensive Income Tax Course
CE Credit Hours: 60
Term: 6 months
This course will enable you to prepare individual tax returns for the general public, including individual taxpayers who operate sole-proprietor businesses or own rental property. At the completion of the course, you will be able to complete most individual non-business and small business (self-employed/Schedule C) tax returns and research tax issues. This course also provides the educational foundation necessary to successfully pass the IRS Competency Exam.

Materials
You can take the online course without a book, but one is available with purchase. The hard copy of The Comprehensive Tax Course Manual makes it easy for participants to read assignments offline. These materials become a great reference once a tax course is completed. You will receive a Certificate of Achievement upon successful completion of the course.
Course Structure
Participants can proceed through each topic at their own pace, taking the open book exam when they are ready. Instructors are available for support, as well as discussion boards with other students.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Prepare most business and nonbusiness individual tax returns
- Pass the IRS Competency Exam
- Perform a thorough interview with a taxpayer
- Determine a taxpayer's filing status and eligibility for exemptions
- Accurately report income and deductions for a taxpayer
- Determine a taxpayer's eligibility for credits and deductions
- Compute income for Schedules C, E and F
- Determine depreciation deductions and eligibility for Section 179
- Accurately calculate a taxpayer's refund or balance due
- Advise a taxpayer in tax planning strategies
